paper; two main scripts: one humanistic script penned Petrarch’s poems and few annotations; a seventeenth-century cursive hand attributed to Ubaldini penned a second series of annotations; Petrarch’s poems with one verse per line with marginal annotations distributed in single column on right.

There are two series of annotations: 1) occasional marginal annotations by the same hand that transcribed the main text, with references to variant readings or (in red or blue ink) to the order of lines or of poems (as in the case of the first line of RVF 27 and 28 at fols. 14v, 10v respectively); 2) more frequent and longer marginal annotations by Federico Ubaldini, which mostly deal with the literary sources used by or known to Petrarch. For instance, next to RVF 48, Ubaldini writes ‘Se mai foro p[er] foco Questo son[n]etto hà il principio di un epigramma che è nella Antologia’ (fol. 17r); next to RVF 168.8 ‘ne si ne no: nel mio cor suona i[n]tero’, Ubaldini recognizes an imitation of Dante [Inferno VIII.111] ‘Ne si ne nò: nel mio cor suona intero Dante ne si ne nò nel capo mi tenzona, là imitazione è manifesta, onde p[er]ciò si potrà leggere negli stampati Ne si ne nò: nel mio cor suona intero, aggiungendoci che così il uerso è più uago à gran uia’ (fol. 60r). Ubaldini’s annotations also deal with stylistic and literary devices, mostly approving Petrarch’s choices of words.
 
Between the hard cover and the flyleaf is a fol. of smaller format in which there is a brief note by a later hand regarding the annotations contained in the ms.: ‘Sono le postille di mano del C[onte] Ubaldini, del quale era q[ues]to codice, che poi per testam[en]to lo lassò a P[apa] Ales[sandro] VII’. At the bottom of fol. I1r there is a note of possession: ‘Di BenedettoValubbio Urbinate’; a few maniculae
