Notes

In the two chapters of his work dealing with Petrarch, Frangipane mostly focuses on a straightforward content-based reading of RVF 28, which he interprets as the lyrical text in which the poet encourages a holy war to be undertaken against the Muslims.

In chapter 9 of his Del parlar senatorio, Frangipane points out that Petrarch first presents the reasons why such a venture should be undertaken (on the basis of the virtues of utilitas and honestas from a Christian perspective), then lists those who have to take part in the deed, and finally explains why – thanks to God’s will – the victory will be easily obtained.

In chapter 10, Frangipane gives a succinct rhetorical reading of Petrarch’s canzone, focusing on the tropes the poet employed in order to persuade and provide evidence of the possible positive result of a holy war.
