Notes

In the preface, Zoppio states his desire to defend Petrarch against hostile critics by revealing their mistaken judgements. Zoppio sets the dialogue between Orazio Canobio and himself during a meeting of the Accademia dei Catenati. Zoppio comments on single passages from critical works on Petrarch by Lodovico Castelvetro, Girolamo Muzio, Bellisario Bulgarini and Benedetto Varchi. In a few cases, Canobio asks Muzio to provide his own explanation for a few obscure passages in Petrarch’s poems.

In the London copy, the last fol. is missing; Zoppio’s Ragionamenti are bound with other works by Zoppio, Giason Denores, and Bellisario Bulgarini. At fol. K4r, one marginal annotation attributes a remark to Angelo Decembrio ‘Questa fu oppositione di Angelo Decembrio assai prima che del Mutio’.
